The Cultural Easton

St Dimitrie Orthodox Christian Church Festival 2025, September 5th and 6th!

On September 5 and 6, St Dimitrie Church on 504 Sport Hill Road in Easton is holding its annual festival serving a full menu of homemade ethnic delicacies, including, stuffed cabbage, grilled lamb, spinach pie and baklava.

In 2006, St Dimitrie purchased land from the former Gordon’s Tree Farm in Easton, since parishioners desired a larger and more central property to accommodate its members who were now living in Fairfield, Easton, Monroe and Trumbull.

Church History and Ancestry:

By the turn of the last century, Macedo-Romanians had settled in the City of Bridgeport, attracted by the many job opportunities offered by its industries. They had come to pursue the “American Dream.”

St Dimitrie Orthodox Christian Church was founded by these hard working Macedo-Romanian immigrants in 1924 under the name of the Cultural Society of St. Vasile, which became St.James Romanian Orthodox Church in 1928. The church acquired its first building that same year at 150 Lee Avenue in Bridgeport. Most of the community lived near by and could walk to church. On August 25, 1929, the first church picnic was held featuring “Pulia cu garnet” and Nuli Shimu with his mandolin.

The church moved to Clinton Avenue after its Lee Avenue building burned down in 1958. The church at 569/579 Clinton Avenue in Bridgeport was built in 1961 as St Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church. The church population began to grow and diversify (just as every American house of worship) to include people of many backgrounds, with intermarriages and converts. Yet, the church traditions and customs still remained strong.

The church feels blessed to call beautiful pastoral Easton its home, with many Christmas trees still growing all around the property.

Everyone is always welcome to visit the beautiful Byzantine style building and to attend liturgical services Sunday at 10:00 am, with a fellowship coffee hour following the liturgy.
