Did you know that Easton is the Christmas Tree Capital of Connecticut, a designation to celebrate its rich farming heritage, with family-owned Christmas tree farms that attract visitors from nearby New York and the tri-state area.
Sabia Tree Farm, one of several Christmas Tree farms in Easton, is not just an ordinary tree farm. It’s a rather unique place where families have gathered on weekends for years on end from the day after Thanksgiving up until Christmas Eve.
“We have families who come here every year and make us part of their tradition. I’ve watched these kids grow up. It’s a really great place,” says Samantha Sabia.
Located in Easton, Connecticut, Sabia Tree Farm is less than 6 miles from the Merritt Parkway. Mike Sabia, owner, has lived on the farm all of his life. Samantha Sabia, owner, who grew up in Redding, also lives there with her husband Mike and their son, Luke. The farm is 9 acres, and 6 1/2 acres are dedicated to growing Christmas Trees.
“We started this as sort of a joke, says Samantha Sabia. “Mike woke up one morning and said, ‘Hey, why don’t we start a Christmas Tree farm?’“ The next day, he started clearing the land. The first year, they only sold 40 trees, because the trees weren’t big enough. Now, on a good day, they sell 140 trees.
Mike is a firefighter in town, and Samantha is a teacher in Stratford. When you go to visit Sabia Tree farm you will be personally greeted by Mike or Sam, or both, and their dedicated volunteer helpers of friends and family, all having a great time, bonding over fun conversation, holiday cheer and a warm burn barrel to stand around and keep warm.
Once you and your family find the perfect tree, one of the staff will tie your tree to the top of your vehicle. But before you leave, make sure you visit the arts and crafts shed where you will find handmade wreaths and gifts from local vendors, as well as one of Samantha’s unique handmade wreaths or potted Christmas arrangements. And you can take a picture next to Mike’s father’s antique truck, which sits out front, welcoming customers and serving as the farm’s trademark.
