Maple Row Farms: Farming the Land Since 1769

Over 200 years of farming history can be found in Easton, CT. Maple Row Farm has been employing sustainable farming methods for over 200 years.

For over eight generations, the Edwards family has been passionate about providing its community with the best products and services. From Maple Row’s Signature Christmas trees, to any of their other fine products, you will see the quality upon which this farm family prides itself.

They closed their dairy business in the 1960’s. When the dairy cows left, Jim began raising his first pair of oxen. Here in New England, oxen were originally used alongside horses prior to the farm’s first tractor in the 1930’s. Oxen certainly aren’t fast, and they don’t do a lot of work on the farm anymore; however, they are trained to pull a heavy load. In fact, they can pull up to 5,000 pounds.

The farm is proud of this small piece of heritage that they have been able to keep alive. Be sure not to miss them when you visit the farm!

In the past fifty years, Maple Row Farm has come to be known as one of Fairfield County’s premier cut tree farms. They use the latest technology and follow closely the trends of today’s industries. Their Signature Christmas Trees have been grown on the farm, since the  4-H project was started by the late Sherwood Edwards in the 1920’s. His son Jim and grandsons, Scott and David, have been lifelong farmers starting under Sherwood’s instruction.

Jim Edwards expanded the holiday crop by planting much of the farm. A tree takes about four years from a seed to the time it is large enough to be put into the field. Once planted, it will grow on average about a foot a year. Different varieties will grow slower or faster than others. Each tree type has its own unique smell. The easiest way to tell what a tree smells like is to break a needle or the end of a branch, which will let out the aroma. Similarly, the tree is brought into the house, cutting a few branches every day will cause the tree to be more fragrant.

Dave also took firewood, a traditional side product of the farm, and modernized the cutting and splitting process to produce a quality product at a reasonable price.

Another side product of the farm is mulch. Scott has spent the last ten years enhancing the Grower’s Choice Mulch Line through innovation and ingenuity. The farm has the finest locally produced products as well as a full line of bagged soils, grass seed, fertilizers, and more.  All of our products can be purchased at our farm’s store located at 227 Stepney Road.

There’s no better way to usher in the holidays than by cutting your own fresh Christmas tree. It’s a tradition that your whole family will cherish. A little sense of adventure is needed for this search, since the entire farm is always open for searching.  Every tree is available and there is no particular area where there is an abundance of a certain type or size tree.

Whether it’s supplies for beautifying your yard, or in search of experiencing the perfect tree and family holiday tradition, It’s worth a visit to the beautiful historic and scenic Maple Row Farm.
